Summary

Attachment theory is used as a theoretical framework for exploring the bond that attaches partners in couples that experience severe and recurrent wife assault. Using Bartholomewís Peer Attachment Interview (1996), attachment styles were established for each partner of eight intact couples experiencing histories of violence as part of larger interview protocol that examined their affective experience concerning the worst incident of violence that occurred between them. The principal aim of this study was to establish the attachment style of each partner in order to isolate aspects of their interactions that might have an effect on the occurrence of repetitious violence within their couple. What emerged from this analysis was a sub-group of violent couples composed of men who showed a preoccupied attachment style which were matched with fearfully attached women. These combinations of attachment styles, as well as the other matches found, are presented and discussed in relation to the recurrent violence experienced.

Zusammenfassung

Die Zuneigungstheorie dient als theoretischer Bezugsrahmen für die Erforschung der Bindungen, die Ehepaare mit schweren, wiederholten Gewaltproblemen in der Ehe zusammenhalten. Anhand des Peer Attachement Interviews von Bartholomew (1996) wurden die Zuneigungsmuster der acht Ehepaare der Gruppe im Rahmen einer Studie definiert, dessen Ziel die bessere Kenntnis der affektiven Aspekte war, die mit dem gewalttätigsten Ereignis zusammen hingen, das die Paare erlebt hatten. Das Hauptziel ist die Festlegung des Zuneigungsmuster jedes einzelnen, um daraus die Aspekte zu isolieren, die einen Einfluss auf die Gewaltausbrüche im Paar zu haben scheinen. Die Analyse der Ergebnisse ermöglicht das Herausbilden einer Untergruppe unter den Paaren, in der die Männer ein besorgtes Zuneigungsmuster und ihre Ehegattin ein ängstliches Zuneigungsmuster vorweisen. Diese Verbindungen sowie andere Kombinationen werden in Zusammenhang mit der erlebten Gewalt in der Ehe dargestellt und untersucht.

La théorie de l'attachement sert de cadre de référence théorique pour explorer les liens qui unissent des couples qui connaissent une problématique de violence conjugale sévère et répétée. À l'aide du Peer Attachment Interview de Bartholomew (1996), les patrons d'attachement des huit couples de l'échantillon ont été définis dans le contexte d'une recherche visant à mieux connaître les aspects affectifs associés au pire incident de violence qu'ils aient connu. L'objectif principal consiste à déterminer le patron d'Attachement de chacun dans le but d'en isoler les aspects qui semble avoir un effet sur les incidents de violence au sein du couple. L'analyse des résultats permet de dégager la présence d'un sous-groupe de couples au sein desquels les hommes présentant un attachement de type inquiet alors que leurs conjointes présentent un attachement craintif. Ces associations, de même que d'autres combinaisons, sont présentées et analysées en lien avec la violence vécue au sein du couple.
