Kidney Transplantation for Highly Sensitized Patients: Is there a Need for a European Solution?
I. I. N. Doxiadis, F. H. J. Claas

The accumulation of highly sensitized (HS) patients on the waiting list of organ exchange organisations can be considered today as a fact. To solve the problem several programs have been established worldwide. These programs try to help these patients in receiving an adequate organ in an acceptable waiting time. Besides the understanding of the reasons of sensitization and reducing their incidence, a direct help for these patients is therefore required. In the present report we advocate not only the establishment of such programs for providing suitable organs to HS patients on a national level but showing their limitations we propagate an inter-european co-operation with the goal to increase the donor pool for this type of patients. By establishing a European Highly Sensitized List with mandatory exchange and neutral balance for the participating centers it might be possible to help highly sensitized patients in the near future.

Key words: Highly sensitized patients, HIT, acceptable mismatches, AM
