The Burden of Heart Disease in Canada
– What are the Perspectives for the Future Development?
J. G. Fodor, K. B. Adamo
The steady decline in cardiovascular disease (CVD)
mortality in Canada over the past three decades appears to be
primarily due to improved interventional clinical procedures,
advancement in pharmacological therapy and, to a lesser extent,
primary prevention. This decline in mortality has resulted in
increased CVD prevalence and in turn to increased demand on health
care services. High priority should be given to development of new
treatment modalities such as the artificial heart and left ventricular
assist devices.
