Our data support the hypothesis that the ATP-sensitive potassium channel opener nicorandil can provide additional protection over hyperkalemic cardioplegia in long-term myocardial preservation. The property of nicorandil that inhibits intracellular calcium loading after a prolonged ischemia may contribute to the myocardial protective efficacy of this agent as an additive to conventional hyperkalemic cardioplegic solutions.
Key words: myocardial preservation, hyperkalemic cardioplegia, intracellular calcium loading
