Perspectives on Myocardial Protection

Abstract:
Since the dawn of cardiac surgery, surgeons have strived for the achievement of optimal myocardial protective strategies. The resulting evolution of cardioplegia has seen the development of sophisticated methods of cardioplegic delivery and the formulation of a variety of cardioplegic solutions. This review summarizes several aspects of cardioplegia, discussing controversies and current research in the field.
