Abstract:
The guiding principles of cardiopulmonary bypass heparinization
were formulated in the 1970s. However, since this time,
earlier correction of congenital heart defects, the emergence of
sensitive markers of coagulation, new monitoring technologies and
improvements in the biocompatibility of circuit materials have
each contributed to the feeling of uncertainty surrounding these
standards. This review explores the main issues and the progress
which has been made towards improving anticoagulation management
for paediatric open-heart surgery.
